KEEP YOUR ROOF HEALTHY
Living in New York State means dealing with lots of snow! Every year we see ice and snow buildup on our roofs and over time this buildup can cause damage.

As snow melts, more water runs down the roof and often meets an ice dam that causes water to back up under the shingles. This causes damage that cannot only harm your roof, but can cause major water damage throughout your whole home.

If you notice heavy condensation on your walls or a leak make sure you call the roofing professionals at Collegiate Builders to come take a look!

Here are some tips from the experts to prevent winter leaks from happening:

-
Clean gutters are imperative at the beginning of the winter season. Making sure all debris is cleared out of your gutters will allow melting snow and ice an access route off the roof. When gutters are clogged, it makes watershed much more difficult- often causing an ice dam. Ice dams are dangerous because they become very heavy and can essentially pull your gutter away from or off of the house, causing a very expensive fix
-
In spring, once the snow melts, it is a good idea to inspect your property for damage and catch small problems before they become big ones. It can be dangerous to get up on your roof, so feel free to do so visually from the ground using binoculars

Melting snow is often caused by warm, moist air escaping through the attic due to a poor vapor barrier and insulation. Before the winter, take some time to make sure there is a vapor barrier in place and that it is of good quality. Make sure your attic is insulated properly so the integrity of your roof will last longer!
